A free model can become part of a useful coding workflow before anyone asks what happens when the promotion ends. That question matters now that Cat Jam has been identified as Reflection Beam: the two available route names have different end-of-offer behaviour.
Vercel’s October 16 Beam announcement identifies the former stealth/cat-jam model and says the launch offer applies when Reflection AI serves it. This is a dated service update, not a promise of indefinite free access or a recommendation based on our own model tests.
Choose the failure mode deliberately
According to the announcement, the standard reflection/beam route with provider reflection transitions to paid pricing when the offer ends. The reflection/beam-free route stops serving instead. One favours continuity; the other creates an explicit stop. Neither is universally the better choice.

For an invented weekend experiment, stopping may be preferable to an unattended bill. For an approved production process, an abrupt stop may be unacceptable—but continuing requires a verified budget, current rates and an owner for the decision. The offer’s exact ending date and subsequent rates were not established in this review. Check them before relying on either behaviour.
Also inspect the surrounding application. A free-only model name does not cap the cost of other tools, storage or fallback models. If the application silently switches providers after an error, its overall behaviour may differ from the stop you expected.
Free access and privacy are separate questions
A service can be free without being suitable for confidential code. Before submitting private material, verify the actual route’s retention, training-use conditions, logging and access boundaries. A gateway advertising zero-data-retention support does not establish that the selected model-provider route has it enabled or available.
Do not turn a warning from an earlier stealth offer into a current Beam contract, either. A renamed model needs a fresh route-specific check. The current Beam model listing is a starting point for checking its providers and their linked terms; this article does not establish Beam-route zero data retention or approval for NDA-protected inputs.
Open weights do not make a hosted request local
Vercel describes Beam as an open-weight model and links an Apache 2.0 release. That describes the announced release, not our independent audit of every distributed file or dependency. It also does not change where a hosted API request is processed.
In a mixture-of-experts model, selected parts of the model participate in processing an input. The active parameter count is not the same as the entire model’s storage requirement or the memory needed by a deployment. An efficient-looking active count is therefore not evidence that an ordinary laptop can run the full release.
Inference still needs an execution environment. Choosing hosted access, operating downloaded weights and granting a coding agent tools are separate decisions with separate costs and permissions. None was configured or tested for this article.
Make a small trial answer a specific question
Use a public or invented repository and a bounded task: explain a failing test, propose a patch and run the existing checks in a controlled environment. Record the model route, provider, date, input and acceptance criteria. Review the patch rather than accepting a successful-looking narrative.
Compare useful completed work, not just output speed. A short response that misses a requirement is not cheaper in the practical sense if it creates more review and repair. Keep model results separate from failures in tools, permissions or the network.
Before the offer becomes a dependency
Name who may approve spending and what should happen when the route stops. Decide whether work should pause, queue for a person or use a separately approved alternative. Test that policy without exposing private material or deliberately incurring an unapproved charge.
The guide to agent permissions and rollback covers the action boundary. If a request fails ambiguously, reconcile the outcome before retrying. A promotion can be a useful trial window, provided its ending is part of the design rather than a surprise.
